No temperature sensing
The furnace/muffle can be controlled on a percentage time basis. Most furnace/muffle applications require a controlled atmosphere that will not permit a percentage time-based means of control.

The temperature is usually sensed by a thermocouple that extends into the furnace/muffle chamber. The internal furnace/muffle temperature is sensed and controlled by a temperature controller (not included.)

Heating element temperature sensing
A third approach is to sense the heating element temperature by placing a quartz thermowell next to the coil. A thermocouple is also placed inside the thermowell to establish a reliable mechanism for temperature control. Although sensing coil temperature is often not needed, it has the advantage of providing a reference temperature for controlling the process temperature.
